The main window in a Three By Five file, usually located at the bottom of the screen, is called the Card File window. This is because it contains one or more containers that we call Card Files. These card files are analogous to the folders used by the Finder to organize the programs and documents on your hard disk. Whereas Folders contain files and programs, Card Files contain cards which themselves contain information that you are trying to organize. Much as your hard disk can contain more than one folder, a Three By Five file can contain more than one Card File. By allowing a Three By Five file to contain multiple Card Files, it enables you to segment your ideas into related groupings of cards, or perhaps to develop more than one idea in a file by creating a Card file for each idea or topic.
Each Card File contains exactly one Corkboard window and one Outline window. As mentioned earlier, both the Corkboard and the Outline windows contain exactly the same information. Each provides you with a different view of the same data, so you can choose which representation is best for you in each circumstance.
To Add a New Card File
Click on the large Folder button.
To Delete a Card File
Click on the desired Card File's icon (Rolodex picture) to select it. Then, click on the large Trash Can button.
To Move a Card File Around
Click your mouse on the Card File's Icon and drag it around the screen.
To Edit the Title
Click your mouse on the Title and it will become editable, just like folder and file names in the Finder.
To Open up a Card File's Corkboard Window
In order to see the cards it contains, double-click on the Card File's icon and its Corkboard window is immediately brought up on the screen, ready for you to view, edit or add to the cards contained there.
To Open up a Card File's Outline Window
Select the Card File by clicking on it once. This highlights the Card File. Then, select the Outline command from the Windows menu and the Outline window is brought up on the screen.
